Finding the perfect job
Before you launch yourself into the hunt for a new job, take a minute to stand back
and think about the kind of job you really want. Not the fantasy rock star/actor/footballer
type jobs - the realistic ones. What do you think you could do? What would you enjoy
doing?
You need to ask some serious questions of yourself - don't forget that you're hopefully
going to be in your chosen job for a long and successful time.
Think about the issues in the list below and how they apply to you:
-
How did you get on in your last job?
-
What did you like and dislike about it?
-
What do you like to do at work?
-
What type of people do you get on best with?
-
Do you prefer to work indoors or outside?
-
How ambitious are you?
-
How important is your home life?
-
How far would you be prepared to travel?
Make sure you do your research. Once you've identified areas of work that may interest
you, find out a little more about them. Use the Internet and your local library to
discover more about your chosen industry and check out the average salaries for people
in the jobs you think you could do.
Think again about the types of industry you've been looking at.
-
Are you qualified enough to do the work you have been looking at?
-
Would you need to go on training courses or even take time out to study at college
or university?
-
Do you know anyone already in the business who could give you a few pointers about
how to get in?
When you've identified the areas you are most interested in and have weighed up the
pros and cons, start looking at the jobs on offer. Don't worry if you get a rejection
letter or two - it's no personal reflection on you, just that your skills and qualifications
may not have been exactly right for the job. But if you are continually knocked back
for the same type of job then ask yourself why.
Are you really qualified to do what you want? Is your CV up to scratch? Do you need
some interview tips?
Whatever happens, stay positive. There is a job out there with your name on it - you've
just got to track it down!
