First day nerves
You've got the job and it's your first morning in your new job. You've put in a lot
of hard work to get this far - this is NOT the time to blow it.
Follow the tips below to help everything go smoothly:
-
The No1 Golden Rule is: DON'T ARRIVE LATE! It may only be a minute
or two but it will be noticed - and remembered.
-
Make a good impression. Be polite, courteous and friendly. But don't
get over-friendly with your new colleagues - facing a sexual harassment case on your
first day is not the best career move.
-
Steer clear of arguments. You may be right but having a stand-up
row on day one isn't going to impress anyone. Criticising business plans, targets
and work methods this early on will also reserve you a place at the top of the company
blacklist.
-
Think about what you are doing. You are bound to make a few mistakes
as you find your feet but make sure there are no serious problems. Any real howlers
this early on will not go down well and will make your boss wonder if you really are
the right person for the job.
-
Don't start taking over the office. Avoid complaining about the heat,
the cold, the coffee, the hard chair and the BO from the person next to you in the
first few days - these are all problems that can be tackled later. You don't want
to get labelled a whinger or a troublemaker from the start.
-
At the end of the day, bide you time. Don't leap up from your seat
and run off toward the doors at 5pm - wait to see what the 'company culture' is and
what other people do. Make sure you aren't the first to leave the office - it won't
look good if claimed during the interview you claimed to be a team player.
Above all - enjoy yourself. You've worked hard to get to where you are, so make the
most of it!
